Scrap metal pickup in Para Hills, and what comes out of it
Para Hills is the furthest north we go on this run at about fourteen minutes, and it is still a free pickup.
Para Hills was hay farmland until Reid Murray Developments started building here in 1959. The Para Hills Estate was the largest private housing development in South Australia at the time, and homes were sold as a package: land, house, and appliances thrown in as an incentive to buy.
Those appliance packages are a genuinely useful thing to know about Para Hills, because it means a whole suburb was fitted out with the same white goods, hot water systems and heaters in the same few years. Original stoves, cylinders and heaters have been coming out of these houses in waves ever since. Steel appliance bodies are worth less than people expect, but the copper motor windings and the cylinders inside them are worth collecting properly.
Because Para Hills is the longest leg, we book it rather than squeeze it in, so give us a day or two of notice where you can. The Reid Murray estate homes all came with the same appliance package, so if you are clearing an original kitchen or laundry there is usually more metal than people expect. Leave the motors attached, we would rather strip them properly at the yard.
It is the longest leg of our north-east run, so Para Hills pickups usually get scheduled rather than squeezed in, but there is no extra charge for the distance.

Frequently asked questions - Para Hills
Do you really come as far as Para Hills for free?
Yes. Para Hills is about fourteen minutes from the yard, which is the far end of our run, and it is still inside the free pickup zone. We may ask you to wait for a day that suits the route.
Are old appliances worth anything?
Less than most people hope, if you are weighing the steel shell. The value is in the copper motor windings and in a copper hot water cylinder, so it is worth us taking the lot rather than you paying to dump it.
Why does an original Para Hills house have more metal than expected?
Because the homes were sold as packages. Reid Murray Developments started building here in 1959 and threw appliances in as an incentive, so a whole suburb was fitted out with the same stoves, cylinders and heaters in the same few years. Clearing an original kitchen or laundry usually turns up more than people think.
Can I bring my Para Hills scrap to the yard instead?
Absolutely, and it is quicker if you have a ute. We are at 35 Jacobsen Cres, Holden Hill, open seven days from 7am to 5pm, which is about fourteen minutes down from Para Hills. You get the same rates either way, we just do not have to fit you into the run.
Do you buy old electrical cable from Para Hills?
Yes. Insulated cable and wire is priced separately from bare copper because we have to strip it, so it sits lower per kilo, but it is still worth real money. If you have a decent length of heavy cable it is worth weighing rather than cutting the ends off and binning the rest.
Nearby suburbs we collect from on the same run
Para Hills sits 14 minutes from our Holden Hill yard, in the City of Salisbury. These are the suburbs either side of it, so if you are closer to one of them, start there.
