Dernancourt is named after the Battle of Dernancourt, fought on 28 March 1918, where around 1,230 Australians died and South Australian soldiers -- including many from the Tea Tree Gully area -- held Allied positions. The suburb straddles two council areas, Tea Tree Gully and Port Adelaide Enfield, and sits against the River Torrens Linear Park.

Dernancourt has been one of the strongest rebuilding suburbs in the north-east, and rebuilding is what produces metal. When an older house on a good block comes down or gets extended, the roof sheeting, guttering, downpipes, hot water cylinder and copper pipe all come out at once, and that is a far better load than the same house drip-feeding one appliance a decade.
