Scrap metal pickup in Highbury, and what comes out of it
Highbury is eleven minutes from the yard, on the hills side of the north-east, and it is one of the easier suburbs for us to get a vehicle into.
Highbury was established as a village in 1857, one of the seven original settlements in what is now the City of Tea Tree Gully. Like Hope Valley it sat quiet for a century -- the real residential growth came through the 1950s, 60s and 70s, by the end of which the southern half of the council area was established.
Highbury housing is mostly that 1960s and 70s brick-and-tile stock, which means the metal is in predictable places: the hot water service, the air conditioner, the roof plumbing, and whatever is in the shed. We get a steady run of split-system changeovers out of Highbury, and an old air conditioner is worth collecting because the coil and the compressor windings are copper even when the casing is not. Highbury was one of the seven original villages of the district back in 1857, but almost nothing standing here is that old. The housing that matters to us went up between the 1950s and the late 1970s, by which point the southern half of the council area was fully established and has been ageing together since. A brick and tile house of that era also hides less metal in the walls than a weatherboard one, so the roof plumbing, the carport framing and the shed are where a Highbury load actually comes from. And because Lower North East Road runs straight from the yard to you, a smaller Highbury load is still worth our trip, which is not true of every suburb this far out.
The 1960s and 70s brick-and-tile stock here is predictable to work with: driveways you can reverse up, and the metal usually in the shed or on the side of the house. Split system changeovers are the steady run out of Highbury, and we will take the whole outdoor unit rather than have you pull the coil out. Leave the gas in it, that is our problem not yours. Highbury also has a lot of original steel-framed carports and garden sheds still standing, and those come down in one piece if you want the space back.
Straight out along Lower North East Road and we are there in about ten minutes, so Highbury is usually a same-day or next-day pickup.

Frequently asked questions - Highbury
Is an old air conditioner worth anything?
More than it looks. The casing is low-grade steel, but the coil and the compressor windings are copper, and that is where the value is. We will take the whole unit rather than you pulling it apart.
How fast can you get to Highbury?
About eleven minutes down Lower North East Road from our Holden Hill yard, so Highbury jobs are normally same-day or next-day.
What is the most common Highbury job?
A split system changeover. The suburb is largely 1960s and 70s brick and tile, and those houses are now on their second or third air conditioner. We take the whole outdoor unit, because the coil and the compressor windings are copper even though the casing is not.
Do you take the gas out of the air conditioner, or do I need to?
We handle it. Refrigerant has to be dealt with properly and that is our job, not yours, so leave the unit intact. Highbury gives us a steady run of split system changeovers and we would rather take the whole outdoor unit than have someone attack the coil with a grinder.
Can you collect from a Highbury property I do not live at?
Yes, with the owner's okay. Deceased estates and rental clean-ups are common enough here and we only need whoever is responsible for the property to be the one asking. We will not strip metal off a property on a neighbour's suggestion.
