Accounts & paperwork

Commercial scrap accounts and paperwork.

The reason businesses avoid scrap yards is rarely the rate. It is that the whole thing feels like cash in a pocket with no paperwork, which is useless to a business with a bookkeeper, a BAS and an auditor.

  • Weights by grade
  • EFT to the business
  • Records kept
  • Regular statement

A commercial account is not a loyalty card. It just means your business is a known customer with a payment method, a record of every load and a rate you were actually quoted.

What an account gets you

  • Weights by grade, every collection. Not one number for a mixed load. Copper weighed as copper, steel as steel, and you keep the figures.
  • EFT payment to the business account. Money into the business, not cash into someone's pocket, which is what your accountant needs and what the law requires on several metals anyway.
  • A quoted rate, and honesty when it moves. Metal markets move weekly. A standing rate is quoted against that, and when it genuinely changes we say so rather than adjusting the docket quietly.
  • A statement you can reconcile. Collections, weights and payments on one document.
  • A named contact. Not a different number every time.

ID and records, and why they exist

South Australia regulates scrap metal dealing, and it does so because metal theft is a real problem. In practice that means identification is recorded and some metals must be paid non-cash. None of that is an obstacle to a legitimate business. It is the same information you would give anyone you invoice, and the records it creates are the records your own books want.

Our plain-English write-up of the current state of the SA rules, including what has and has not yet come into force, is in the SA scrap metal rules guide.

Setting one up

  1. Business name, ABN, site address and a contact.
  2. Bank details for EFT payment to the business.
  3. ID recorded as the SA rules require.
  4. The bins, the schedule and the rate agreed in writing.
  5. First collection. Weights by grade from the very first load.

Questions we get asked

Do we need an ABN?

For a business account, yes. It is how the payment and the records line up with your own books.

Can we still be paid cash?

On some metals. On the metals SA rules require to be paid non-cash, it is EFT. Either way you get the weights in writing.

How often are we paid?

On a regular cycle agreed when the account is set up, usually aligned to the collection schedule.

Will the rate change without telling us?

No. If the market moves enough to change your rate we tell you. A rate that quietly drifts on the docket is how businesses end up distrusting this entire trade.

Want it set up properly as a business?

Ring with your business name, your site and what you generate. We will set the account, the bins and the rate.
